WDSD 2020

World Down Syndrome Day

This day occurs on the 21st day of the 3rd month because we celebrate the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome which is what leads to Down syndrome.

WDSD exists to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome by choosing activities that show support and awareness to those individuals. Rocking Socks has become and easy, attainable and VERY visual way to demonstrate this support around the globe. This movement is seeking to share what it IS to have Down syndrome - something to be celebrated. It’s a day of advocating for the inclusion, respect and understanding that individuals with Down syndrome have a great deal to offer their communities.

PLEASE REMEMBER the main goal of WDSD is to educate your friends, family, colleagues, students, children, about what Down syndrome is. People with Down syndrome can and do lead happy, healthy, fulfilled lives. They participate is programs, have jobs, enter into meaningful relationships and so on. Click here for more resources and information about WDSD and Down syndrome.

Chasing Hazel and WDSD

We have been celebrating this day for many years. It has evolved over the years from quiet days at home to a movement that seems to be taking off in our community. MANY MANY schools, offices, and various places in the community have recognized this day as relevant. Over the last couple of years the City of Windsor has had an official proclamation of this day, at our request. The Mayor even rocked his socks a couple years back!!

In the past, we have been invited into many spaces to tell our story. Visiting schools to advocate for those who are different has become something quite popular, especially around WDSD. Always sharing the message that we all inherently want to be valued, and seen as worthy. We have educated so many in our community about what living with Down syndrome truly means - a life of dreams, goals, and determination. We have tried to create conversation, uncomfortable ones at times, in an effort to challenge the stereotypes that exist, and create a space where we are all seen for who we are.
